Social Studies We have completed our study of Africa, and we are traveling to Asia. The students will be making a booklet on the countries from information they will collect in the computer lab, and may collect at home also. They will work on the project in class. They will be making a graph comparing and contrasting the land area of each country to its population. http://lizardpoint.com/fun/qeoquiz/index.html Take advantage of this website. It is helpful and entertaining. Another website to check out http://www.hippocampus.com
Reading We have started reading No More Dead Dogs. We will be reading the book in class. I have managed to get a class set. If a student wants to take a book home they can check it out. The students will be assessed by quizzes, writing questions from the reading, class discussion, and a final project. The book has been, in the past, a 7th grade book bee book.
Language Arts The students will be presenting the John Paul II Wax Museum to the public on May 27th , at 1:00, in the gymnasium, on the school campus. The students will be choosing characters, both historical and current. The characters the students choose should have value to the society, as well as be of good reputation. The students will research the person they choose, write a brief, interesting piece on the person that they can memorize and present. The students will give the presentation to the class for a grade the week prior to the presentation for the public. This will also serve as a run-through for the students in preparation for the wax museum presentation. The Language Arts grade is derived from a variety of sources since the students are responsible for incorporating appropriate mechanics and usage in all of their school- work. I will always remind them that this will be considered in grading their assignments. In observing their papers to this point I see that they are aware of this and well prepared for it.
Spelling The spelling word list will, in the future, be derived from a spelling/vocabulary book. I will continue to provide the list the week prior to the test. Pre-tests will be on Thursdays, and tests on Fridays. Recognizing the value of developing vocabulary, I am incorporating it into our spelling lesson, hoping it will help prepare the students for the high-school entrance exams they will be taking in two years.
The sixth grade is taking a field trip. We are going to see Treasure Island on May 8th.
