Mathematics: Problem Solving Strategies

Having difficulty solving problems? Here are some strategies to help you:

1.)  Look for key words.

A. Read the problem carefully.

B. Underline the key words.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

C.     Ask yourself, “What do I need to do? What facts are given? What do I need to find out?”

2.)     Picture the problem (in your mind or use a drawing)

3.)    Solve the problem

4.)    Check your answer.  Ask yourself, “Does it look right? Does it seem probable? Did I answer the question? Did I use the same units?”
